US & CA supporting Marissa Nadler ~
I’ll be going on tour with Marissa Nadler in February. Her music has had a special place in my heart since I first heard it many years ago, in 2016, I think, when Bury Your Name came out. I was struck by her ghostly, crooning voice, how it builds a scene around itself, seems to drift out through a screen door on a hot summer evening. It’s the perfect instrument for her Southern Gothic ballads, all odes to bygone youth and love, a once-bright present distilled in inky, sepia-toned vignettes. Will we ever be free from the memories that surround us? she seems to ask.
Her answer: not on this earth. Her latest record, New Radiations, pans upward from this faded world, toward the heavens. On “Weightless Above the Water,” she sings,
You don’t think about the danger, the bluest of the blues
I’m way out of range here but closer to the moon
They forbade me for trying again and again
Had no fear of dying in flames of crimson
